Takao’s practice is a trinket box full of life’s confetti and debris. In making, they ask: “What world do I want to live in?”
Navigating immigration and multi-cultural family relations have granted Takao the permission of multitudes. They have dedicated their life to the pursuit of authentic love. Their work often dances between themes of courage, slowness, and change. The tangible, visible work is a byproduct of their practice’s heartbeat: when stripped of all materiality, the focus of their multi-disciplinary practice lies in the exploration of humanity and the immigrant child's responsibility of self-actualization. Works in ceramics, poetry, and painting are simply haptic navigations of a life full of joy, grief, malaise, and everything in between. The fullness of life does not emerge from a platitude of constant happiness, but rather, the courage to experience the spectrum of loss and growth in pursuit of true love (with ourselves and humanity). Through their practice, they hope to deconstruct the inherent narcissism of the 21st century and recalibrate us to the things that matter.
Takao is the lead organizer of Multi Projects, a DIY multi-disciplinary curatorial project providing educational programming in printmaking and independent publishing in Honolulu, Hawai’i with collaborators in New York, Los Angeles, and beyond. Multi aims to bridge the gap between 1) the artist and the public, and 2) artists to each other. Through their personal practice and Multi Projects, Takao engages in love and play with academic rigor.
